One of my favorite pastimes is watching HGTV. I particularly enjoy the show “Lakefront Bargain Hunt”. This show captured my heart because it has sparked a desire within me for a lake house. One particular show was about a couple who was finally fulfilling their dream of purchasing a lakehome. Prior to the show ending; as the family was sitting around the firepit, looking out over the lake; the wife stated, the fulfilment of the dream meant that the family now had a place where they could slow down and reconnect. Oh how my heart resonated with her thoughts. I too longed to find a place that allowed me the opportunity to slow down and reconnect.
The fast paced life we live in today often leave many of us all longing for a time and place where we can slow down and reconnect. Our everyday lives are filled with jobs and family related responsibilites. There are the long list of to-do’s that never seem to dwindle down because we constantly add 2-3 more things to the list everytime we cross one thing off.
Not to mention the constant expectation of those we share our everyday lives with. Someone always needs something. There is always an event to attend, people to celebrate, our jobs that oftentimes requires more hours than we signed up for. These are the things we choose to do; the things that make up our everyday lives. Truth be told, we would not neccesariy give up any of the things on our list, because we cannot exist and be happy without others who need us; and we need them as well.
However, our hearts still do long for opportunites to slow down and reconnect. Our hearts know that it is something we must do in order to truely be happy and live a life of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment
To slow down and reconnect allows us the oportunity to:
- Listen to the wisdom of the Holy Spirit of God within
- Listen to the wisdom of God through His words
- Reconnect with our true inner voice
- Connect with our family members and friends in a way that allows us to truely listen and hear them
- Re-examine our lives to ensure we stay true to our core values and what really matters
Even God took time to slow down and reconnect.
In Genesis 1: 31, after God created the heaven and earth and all that is in it, the verse states,
Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good
Taking time to slow down and reconnect allows us to examine our live and ask ourselves if what we are creating in our life is good.
What can you do or where can you go that will allow you the opportunity to slow down and reconnect?
You may not be able to purchase a lakehouse in order to slow down and reconnect, however any place will do. For me, that place is sometimes a small writing, meditation, quiet room in my home. Sometimes, it’s my rocking chair on my front porch (no rocking chairs are not just for people in their old age), other times it’s in my backyard garden, a quiet place where I am attempting to create a relaxing atmosphere. Where about you?
Don’t wait for the perfect moment or perfect place to slow down and reconnect. Do it now. You deserve it. At the end of the day you can look back and say, “the life I am creating, it is very good.”
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for providing us with our jobs, our homes, and most importantly our families and friends. Thank you for giving us goals and dreams to pursue: everyday things to do that make up our lives. God, give us also a desire to slow down and reconnect with your Holy Spirit, Your Word, our true inner voice, our core values, and our family.
